Medicare Supplements (also called Medigaps) are sold by private insurance companies. They have a monthly premium that must be paid in addition to your Medicare Part B premium. Original Medicare pays its portion of the bill first, then Medicare sends the remainder of the bill to your Medicare Supplement insurance company. You may have a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage, but not both.
Supplements work with original Medicare, so it is Medicare that determines whether or not the treatment is necessary.
Medicare Supplement plans offer you the most freedom of access to doctors. You have freedom to choose your own doctor (as long as that doctor is accepting new patients), and hospitals from among the thousands of Medicare providers in the nation. No referrals are necessary to see a specialist with this type of coverage. Although some specialists require a doctor's referral.
Although Supplement plans cover medications administered in a hospital setting, such as injectables or chemotherapy drugs, they do not cover retail medications. Therefore, if you decide to purchase a Medicare Supplement and you want prescription drug coverage, you will need to enroll in a separate Part D drug plan. There are plans available in every state starting around $10 per month.
Depending on where you live when you sign up for Medicare, you will have several different Medicare Supplement policies to choose from lettered Plan A - Plan N. Each policy offers a different set of standardized benefits, meaning that policies with the same letter name offer the same benefits. Premiums can vary from company to company.
Under federal law, you get a 6 month Medigap Open Enrollment Period. It starts the first month you have Medicare Part B and you're 65 or older. During this time, you can enroll in any Medigap policy. You may also have a guaranteed issue rights at other times when you have other health coverage that changes in some way. If you think you may be in that situation, give us a call to discuss. After this enrollment period, it’s possible that you will be subject to medical underwriting and unable to buy a Medicare Supplement—or, if you're able to buy one, it may cost more due to past or present health problems, or prescribed medications.
